Professionals within the industry are required to be able to smoothly transition from the role of Individual Contributor to both technical and business leader. They need to develop core leadership skills such as agility, communication, influence and persuasion, the ability to ‘think big’, a strong executive presence and a performance mindset.

Many are considering becoming a more skills-based organisation. Here are five things to put in place to make this move.1. Skills-focused hiring practices – hiring for skills (not education or experience) requires a shift in mindset and changes to recruitment practices (identifying and selecting employees based primarily on acquired skills). 2. Internal Talent Marketplaces – skills-based organisations build marketplaces that allow employees to highlight their skills and abilities and easily find new opportunities within the company. 3. Skills-based Training Programmes – training and development initiatives that focus on enhancing employees' skills and capabilities for a broad base of roles rather than specific job titles. 4. Skills Platforms – utilising new platforms that are capable of capturing, tracking, and importantly verifying all employee skills so managers have clear understanding of all the skills within their workforce. 5. Rewards for Skills – a reward system that offers skill-based pay and promotions and other incentives to encourage employee skill development and continuous learning.it@cork is supporting Tech companies in the SW region move towards a skills-based organisation.
